A new study has revealed widespread illegal fishing by dark fleets — vessels that do not publicly broadcast their location or appear in public monitoring systems — operating in the waters between the Koreas, Japan and Russia. More than 900 illegal boats, of Chinese origin, have been caught using a combination of satellite techniques. Illegal fishing has resulted in the depletion of fish stocks and hardship and death for Korean fishermen forced to go further and further out to get any catch. The new technique will have global implications for illegal fishing.
