The number of prisoners in New South Wales is on the rise, and once inside inmates will spend fewer hours outdoors, are more likely to be assaulted and re-offend compared to their counterparts in other states. This is the grim picture of the Department of Corrective Services as outlined in the For politicians who have pushed the law and order agenda, the figures are a testament that their policies are working. And for the public in general, more prisoners in jail makes for a safer society. But Brett Collins, a spokesperson for Justice Action isn’t so sure. He argues that the State Government’s failure to properly deal with the issue of prisoner welfare, including the high levels of mental illness is contributing to an unsafe society.
