Plans to build nine dams on the main stretch of the Mekong River in Laos have outraged environmentalists and humanitarian groups alike. According to the Lao government however, the plans will lift many Lao people out of poverty by selling off hydro electricity to the country’s energy hungry neighbors, Thailand and Vietnam.
