Cry for Human Rights in Women’s Prisons
Campaigners in Tasmania were today pushing to get women out of prisons because of human rights abuses. Prison authorities remained tight-lipped, while the Eleventh International Conference on Penal Abolition went ahead to try and create awareness. Kim Pate, speaker at the conference and member of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies, spoke to Alex Parry about getting wome out of prisons and into the community where she thinks they belong. Former prisoner and member of Sisters Inside Debbie Kilroy spoke about the images which still haunt her from her days in the prisons. The women came together to speak to Tasmanians about poor conditions inside, in light of the new prison which is near completion in the state.
