Critics say truancy crackdown in NT doesn’t address root causes

In a widening of the Northern Territory intervention, the Federal government has announced plans to link school attendance with welfare payments. The reforms will affect 17 remote and urban communities in the Territory and will be introduced in Parliament before Christmas. But the plan has come under fire by some Indigenous leaders and policy experts, who say the hardline approach will do little to address the deeper problems behind truancy rates in NT Indigenous communities.
