Critical Mass and The Daily Telegraph lock horns
On Friday night, Sydney traffic was brought to a standstill by a bunch of activists on bikes from Critical Mass. Every month, they mass together at Hyde Park and ride to different locations. Once a year they cross the Harbour Bridge, bringing a city that teeters on the edge of gridlock at the best of times to a standstill. According to the group’s website, Critical Mass aims to educate people about sustainable transport – such as cycling, roller blading, walking, buses and trains. They also argue that the roads should be shared safely with cyclists. But the move generated a great deal of anger, with some people claiming that couldn’t get into work and were fired as a result. In response, the Daily Telegraph took the step of printing the private mobile number of the group’s spokesperson, inviting motorists to call and express their road rage. Critical Mass spokesperson Chris Mosley claims the article was inaccurate and that printing his mobile was a breech of his privacy.
