Criminal charges lead to Qld Abortion law reform

The Queensland Government is set to update the Criminal Code to give medical abortions the same legal protection as surgical terminations. Some doctors say this is not enough, but Premier Anna Bligh says if wider changes were put to Parliament, tighter laws could result. This move by the Bligh Government comes after the state’s biggest hospital cancelled these services last week. Doctors at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital say the procedure will no longer be performed, after criminal charges were laid in Cairns.
