Attacks on independent media and journalists critical of the government have increased in Turkey under the AK Party caretaker government. Turkey has also seen an escalation in fighting between government forces and the PKK, the militant wing of the Kurdish party, accompanied by reports of human rights abuses. Analysts are suggesting the attacks on the media are designed to prevent news of human rights abuses reaching the public in the lead-up to the Turkish election on November 1st.
