South Australia is the second to last state to lift the GM moratorium and allow farmers to choose to grow genetically modified crops if they choose. Eleven local councils, concerned for their clean green image, were given the opportunity to apply for exemptions. Those have now been refused by the State government, leaving organic farmers legally exposed if their crops become contaminated, and creating tensions in rural communities.
