Marathon Resources is a uranium exploration company which was fined earlier this for leaving radioactive waste lying around in the pristine wilderness of Arkaroola Sanctuary in South Australia’s remote Flinders Ranges . Now Marathon has been told by the local council in the area that it’s not alright to put other waste, waste which they say isn’t radioactive , in the Hawker town dump. Hawker is a picturesque and historic little town in the middle of the Ranges. Flinders Ranges Council mayor Max McHugh says the decision is final and the waste is now the problem of the company and the local Environment Protection Authority. Marathon have siad they respect the council’s decision and will be looking elsewhere. The Wilderness Society’s Peter Owen says it’s a problem that highlights the difficulties of mining uranium. He hopes the company’s exploration licence is removed altogether.
