As Americans voted to return Barack Obama as President of the United States, the people of Puerto Rico also headed to the polls to have their say on the island’s political future. Despite being U.S. citizens, Puerto Ricans cannot vote in American Presidential elections, however with the people of Puerto Rico voting in favour of becoming an American state, this may soon change.

At a non-binding referendum yesterday, 54% of Puerto Ricans voted to change their 114-year relationship with the U.S. and 65% voted in favour of statehood.
