Peter Costello’s comments this week about ‘mushy multiculturalism’ and the need for imams to teach Australian values have again deepened the distrust between Muslim Australia and the wider community. Dr Ali Ameer is President of the Federation of Islamic Councils and an advisor to the government and he’s furious about the comments saying they were quite unnecessary and really an appeal to right wing voters. He noted that one of the first people to publicly support Costello’s comments was Pauline Hanson.
