The Great Barrier Reef could be placed on the endangered world heritage sites list due to extensive coral bleaching caused by climate change.

Environmental scientists have informed the Reef 2050 advisory group that the joint plan between the federal and state governments to prevent further coral bleaching in the area will not achieve its targets.

This is particularly concerning to the state and federal governments, who have aimed to prevent the endangered listing as they believe it will impact the tourism industry.
