COP27 addresses inequality and Indigenous communities
COP27 is taking place in Egypt. Some of the key issues include keeping global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius, and developing countries receiving financial assistance in mitigating and adapting to climate change.
Experts say vulnerable developing countries are demanding finance for ‘loss and damage’ because they have polluted less and currently mitigating climate change’s impacts caused by developed countries. This is an important agenda because climate change is widening the inequality gap, causing a rise in poverty levels and displacing many vulnerable populations. Countries like South Africa, Brazil and India have greater inequality. This means that high-income individuals in these countries are receiving much larger percentages of the population’s total income.
