The government is under pressure to assure the independence of the nation’s top criminology research centre following the release of a bill to merge it with one of our top crime fighting bodies. The Greens, the Labor Party and the Australian New Zealand Society of Criminologists have been worried the plan could see the Australian Institute of Criminology become little more than a research unit for the Australian Crime Commission under the Coalition’s “super spy agency’ plan.
