Experts have raised concern over a proposal to legalize secret detention in China. China is currently overhauling its criminal procedure law. Reportedly, one proposal is to change the laws governing residential surveillance.

If this proposal is adopted police will have the power to detain suspects in a location outside of their home without notifying their family if they consider it necessary for the investigation. Experts say this is a step backwards for China and aimed at deterring dissidence.
