Concerns over future of wild rivers as QLD election day nears

Queensland goes to the polls on Saturday, and during the campaign the state’s laws governing the management of wild rivers have become the subject of bitter political debate. Labor wants to declare more rivers wild, while the Liberal National Party wants to scrap the concept, and it isn’t clear yet what program of management they would implement in its place. None of this has impressed some of the residents up in Cape York, who say that they’ll have to live with the results of the highly charged debate.

There are a range of views along the rivers about Labor’s existing laws, but there’s one thing many agree on: politicians need to consult more closely with the people who the laws will affect.
