Community Radio’s Political role in Nepal and Timor

A conference in Sydney today is dealing with the issue of democarcy and media. Rajhu Mainall from the Community Radio Support Centre in Nepal says that since its inception ten years ago community radio in his country has led a people’s movement for freedom. Luis Evaristo Dos Santos Soares is coordinator of the Community Radio Centre in Timor-Leste and says the relatively new country has taken to radio keenly, with politicians from all sides using it as a forum and locals , in the absence of telephones, visiting their local station to make their views known.
