Coalition and Labor play hide and seek on budget figures
In the wake of today’s release of budget figures, the government is putting pressure on the Coalition to say where they’ll find the money to pay for their promises. Tony Abbott says that at the last election, Labor didn’t reveal their full costings until the Friday before polling day.
Officials today released a key pre-election document – it’s the document that informs parties and voters about the state of the government’s finances. In bureaucrat-speak it’s the pre-election economic and fiscal outlook, or PEFO.It confirmed what the government had already told us a few weeks ago about the state of the budget – declining government revenues over the course of the year is making it a little more difficult for our politicians to make ends meet.
