The effects of climate change on the Pacific region are real and already harming those who live there. Rising sea levels and extreme weather fluctuations are predicted to worsen for countries like Tuvalu, Kiribas and Papua New Guinea. The Alliance of Small Island States held a closed session as part of this week’s Pacific Islands Forum urging for a moratorium on new coal mines. They’re calling on Australia to stop building new mines, but whether the government will act is still to be seen.
