Independent MP Andrew Wilkie’s proposal for a mandatory gambling pre-commitment scheme took a strange turn today, after the Salvation Army – one of Wilkie’s major partners – reportedly withdrew their support for him.

Though the comments were reported as the official position of the Salvation Army, they actually originated within the organisation’s Eastern Territory division, which does not represent the organisation as a whole. This afternoon, the Salvation Army claimed that the comments were misleading and reaffirmed their support for the scheme.
