Closing the gap in cardiac conditions
Heart related conditions are the number one cause of death in Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander People in Australia, but a report released today shows the gap in cardiac care is improving. The death rate from cardiac conditions for Indigenous people has decreased by 41% between 1998 and 2012, from 347 to 215 per 100,000 people, but we haven’t closed the gap yet. Between 2008 and 2012, only 46% of Indigenous Australians who went to hospital with a serious heart attack had a relevant procedure, compared with 70% of non-Indigenous Australians.
