Professor Ross Garnaut’s interim report last week was unequivocal about the need for Australia to face drastic emissions cuts as soon as possible if climate change disaster is to be averted. At the same time a forestry conference in Tasmania was being told of the danger that global warming poses to old growth forests. Dr Craig Nitschke says that Victoria’s Central Highlands may need human intervention to keep them cool and alive if temperatures rise even slightly over the next decade or two.
