Cleaners criticize Commonwealth Bank over pay & conditions
Breakfast demonstrations against the Commonwealth Bank were held in Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane today. The action, which was entitled “Let them eat bread”, saw Shopping Centre Cleaners and their Supporters hand out free bread and jam to passers-by. The demonstration comes on the eve of Anti-Poverty Day, with organizers intending to draw awareness to the wages paid to cleaning staff at what they say are Commonwealth Bank owned Shopping Centres.
The Union behind the action, United Voice, claims that the wages paid to the cleaners are near the poverty level. The Commonwealth Bank, however, claims the accusations are misleading. They say that the workers involved are not employees of the Commonwealth Bank, and they’re employed by reputable cleaning companies.
