Recently the Shadow Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, provoked anger by suggesting that Australia’s coal reserves are a blessing and should continue to be utilized. Garrett was outlining Labor’s long-term plan to research carbon capture and storage in the hope of ultimately finding a means of producing so-called ‘clean coal’. But critics say the technology is 15 years away.
