The Queensland Government has damned opposition leader Tony Abbott’s plan to overturn State Wild Rivers legislation. The State legislation aims to protect the environmental integrity of 10 rivers in far north Queensland. Queensland Acting Premier Paul Lucas says the legislation has the backing of many in Cape York and in further news, a delegation of Indigenous leaders and Cape York traditional owners are in Canberra lobbying against Mr Abbott’s plan. As Amy Stewart reports, the political debate isn’t about saving the environment, rather it’s about economic development and Indigenous welfare.
