As Bono and his Make Poverty History campaign continue to make headlines, now an Australian organisation of “mainstream Christians” has joined the crusade for social justice. The Centre for an Ethical Society was launched in Sydney today by Bishop George Browning. Incorporating Anglican, Roman Catholic and Uniting Church denominations, it aims to remind all Christians that social justice is a core Christian value. Bishop Browning said the centre wants to raise consciousness about Australia’s poor, the environment and the amount Australia spends on foreign aid. The Wire asked the Bishop earlier whether the Centre’s launch had anything to do with Shadow Minister Kevin Rudd’s call for the churches to hold the Federal Government to account on social justice issues.
