China was shocked recently by the discovery of over 500 people working as slaves in brick kilns Shanxi province. As arrests continue in China the case raises questions about law enforcement in China. It wasn’t until the 1970s that China began to develop a legal system and thirty years later the Government is still trying to promote the benefits of law as well as enforcement. Dr Colin Hawes, law lecturer at UTS and China-based businesswoman Chiara Gensini both say that while Chinese law is developing well in theory, in practice the situation is quite different.
