Political situation in China tightens after Australian journalists are caught in tit for tat row
The forced departure of prominent Australian journalists, Bill Birtles (ABC) and Mike Smith (Australian Financial Review), last month has stripped Australians of on the ground, in country, news coverage of China. It came on the heels of the detention by the PRC Government of Australian news anchor, Chang Lei, and signals a further degradation of our bi-lateral relations with China.
In a further escalation of tensions China has barred academic Clive Hamilton and researcher Alexe Joske from entering the country. This follows and appears in retaliation for our country cancelling the visas of Chinese academics Cheng Hong and Li Jianjun on security grounds.
