Twenty one young people who were jailed for breaking bail conditions that no longer existed are taking part in a class action against the NSW government. Young people charged with minor offences are frequently landed with heavy bail conditions which are later overturned in court. But the NSW police database known as COPS – for Computerised Operational Policing System – is not kept up to date with the computer system at the Department of Justice.

As a result, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre and Maurice and Blackburn lawyers is making a class action on behalf of young people who have been unlawfully detained.
