On Friday 27 September, a boat sunk off Indonesia’s coast. An unusually high number of the asylum seekers were children, and many died because they couldn’t swim the 50 metres back to shore. But despite the high risks, many families are bringing vulnerable children and women onto dangerous asylum seeker boats. The important question is why, and the answer has to do with the government.
