The statistics on child abuse are alarming, with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare releasing figures this year that report a child is abused or neglected every 10 minutes. The reported incidences of child abuse has doubled, with 20,000 cases reported in 1994, and 40,000 reported in 2003. This doesn’t necessarily reflect an awareness of the issue, but rather a rise in social, cultural and economic problems. This week is National Child Protection Week and the National Association for the Protection of Child Abuse and Neglect, or NAPCAN, are calling on communities to join together to attack this problem. CEO of NAPCAN, Adam Foster, talked about the dramatic increase in cases of abuse.
