The Queensland Government will introduce “dry places” in the Cherbourg community by the end of the year. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy Minister Liddy Clark says a total ban on alcohol will not be put in place, because it would be too hard to police given the community’s close proximity to the town of Murgon. Instead, drinking will be prohibited in some areas, including around the school and council, but these are yet to be finalised. Lillian Gray from the Jundah Aboriginal Corporation women’s shelter in Cherbourg says alcohol plans may not be popular, but they are needed.
