Meanwhile there is a high state of tension in detension centres in Northern Australia, with hunger strikes under way in Darwin’s Northern Australia Immigraion Detention Centre, and the Scherger Detention Centre near Weipa in Queensland. People in touch with the detainees inside these centres say that the erratic treatment of asylum claims – especially those of ethnic Hazaras – is one of the main causes of this current outburst of anger.
