The current hard-line stance against asylum seekers coming to Australia is not new. Subsequent governments have been implementing policies to deter asylum seekers for the last two decades. But opposition and human rights complaints – nationally and internationally – have been consistently increasing. Not so within the Australian society as a majority of Australians still seem to support these policies. This is precisely what civic organisations and human rights advocates all over the country try to change. This way they hope to increase public pressure that can ultimately lead to a policy change.
