Over the weekend, the Central African nation of Chad broke off relations with neighbouring Sudan. The President of Chad has accused Sudan of funding and providing arms to local rebels who have been trying to overturn the government in Chad, which they perceive to be corrupt. Meanwhile, the ongoing conflict in Darfur in southern Sudan has driven more than 200,000 refugees over the border into Chad. On Friday, the President of Chad threatened to oust the Sudanese refugees unless the international community made other arrangements. While the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres yesterday said the threat had been withdrawn, concerns remain that the region could easily spiral into civil war. Associate Lecturer from Macquarie University’s Centre for Middle East & North African Studies, Noah Bassil, spoke to The Wire about the conflict between the two countries.
