From December 1 last year, it became illegal for all NSW provisional licence holders to use their phones in any way while driving. This includes using voice-activated GPS apps while the phone is secured to a hands-free cradle.

Car crash fatalities are on the rise and campaigners say technology use while driving including texting, checking emails, and making calls could be to blame.

So is there ever a valid reason for phone use while driving?
