The lower reaches of the Murray have been dying for some time now, with very little water making its way as far as the mouth. Now work has begun on a series of regulators or weirs which will cut off the freshwater lakes at the mouth from the Murray, eventually damming the Murray for upstream use. Locals at the bottom are watching their environment and their livelihoods disappear and they making as much noise as they can – but is the rest of Australia listening? Retired university lecturer Ruth Trigg this week sailed her canoe past the building works in a one woman protest that at least made local TV news.
