Cane toads have been an ongoing pest for Queenslanders for just over eighty years. But now in an ironic twist of fate, a waste management company in Cairns, together with several local councils are heading a project to rid Queensland of this everlasting pest and turn them into compost for none other than sugar cane farmers. The inaugural event, aptly named “Toad Day Out”, runs this Saturday, and encourages people to collect as many toads as they can, and bring them to waste management company, SITA, where they will then be humanely disposed of. Haydn Slattery, Cairns Plant Manager from SITA Environmental Solutions explained why cane toads are currently such a problem.
