A hung parliament is an opportunity for independent MPs to step up and have a more influential voice than when they stand on their own. Port Pirie’s Geoff Brock has taken the opportunity to join forces with the South Australian Labor party as the Minister for Regional Development. It is also certain that he will have negotiated a number of sweeteners for his local community.

But once the initial noise about his decision quietens will Geoff Brock have any real influence on the government’s decision making? Former Federal MP Tony Windsor and Independent Member for Dennison Andrew Wilkie give a perspective on the difference it made for them to enter into partnership with the Gillard government in 2008.
