The Australian government’s move to omit questions on gender diversity and sexuality in the 2026 census has sparked major outcry from the peak body of LGBTIQ+ health, with other members of the community calling it a ‘betrayal.’

The decision comes over a year after Australian Bureau of Statistics issued  its statement of regret, acknowledging distress felt by this community. In response, the ABS set up an expert advisory committee, to ensure people in this sector are counted.

Speaking at a press conference in Darlinghurst NSW this morning, CEO of Equality Australia Anna Brown expressed the community’s devastation over the Federal government’s recent announcement.
