Researchers are concerned insurance companies can unfairly exclude Australians from coverage based on genetic testing.

Currently holders of life insurance are required to hand over genetic testing results if they are requested by their insurer.

But Industry rules prevent insurers from asking applicants to undergo genetic testing in support of an application.

Researchers say it’s unclear the way insurers make their decisions once they have access to genetic tests and are asking for greater regulation of the process.
