There are calls today for the government to make it easier for Australians to adopt children from other countries, on the first day of National Adoption Awareness Week. Campaigner Deborra-lee Furness, who has two adopted children with her husband Hugh Jackman, is asking Prime Minister Julia Gillard for funding to reinstate a national support group. Australia has the lowest rate of adoption worldwide, with numbers falling since the 1970s.
