State and Federal health ministers this week rejected plans to fast-track the addition of fluoride to bottled water. Although the practice is currently banned in Australia, it might not be by the end of next year. The Australian Beverages Council made an application to the country’s food regulator to allow manufacturer’s to develop a new line of bottled water containing fluoride. It came after a study showed a large increase in tooth decay among 14 and 15 year olds. Dental authorities accused the bottled water industry of contributing to the rise, but others say sugary soft drinks are the more likely culprit.
