Concerns have increased for the cause of democracy in Burma after the news that pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been placed under house arrest for a further eighteen months, conveniently until after the next Burmese elections due in 2010. The Australian government has condemned her conviction and sentencing and called on the ruling military junta to release her and move towards a path of democracy. But the Burmese community in Australia says the statements are not enough.
