Everyone knows someone who loves to hoard stuff, whether it’s in the garage or a spare room, its human nature to store and collect objects. But what happens when people start to take this a little far and their behaviour becomes compulsive? Well increasingly, psychologists are coming to the view that hoarding should be treated as its own, unique, mental illness. With many psychiatrists arguing that by treating it as a separate issue the medical fraternity will open the door to new and more appropriate treatments. On the 14th July, Melbourne will host one of the leading conferences on Psychology where this topic will debated in a panel on compulsive hoarding.
