A parliamentary inquiry into the federal government’s proposed new citizenship tests has today been warned that the move could disadvantage many humanitarian refugees and non-English speaking residents who wish to become Australians. The move, floated earlier this year, will see citizenship applicants’ face an English test as well as a multiple choice quiz on Australian history and culture. But the Federation of Ethnic Community Councils of Australia or FECCA has warned the move would disadvantage those from countries where English is not spoke widely and possibly dissuade many migrants from even applying to become citizens.
