Illegal abortions are currently responsible for 13% of maternal deaths globally, and restrictions on Australian Aid could be contributing to this statistic. Australian aid money is banned from going to any organisation that offers abortion or that gives advice on abortion. The Parliamentary Group on Population and Development has over 50 members from all parties, and they’ve been working since last year to get the ban lifted. Greens Senator Kerry Nettle is a member of the group, and she says that time is running out to get the current government to change the policy.
