Call for protection of Australia’s maritime environment
A report released this week by the Australian Conservation Foundation has drawn attention to the extremely low levels of protection currently afforded to Australia’s marine environment. The report claims that existing legislation, which aims to control the exploitation of our oceans, is too confusing and inconsistent to be effective. The Conservation Foundation has called for the development of a single national policy aimed at protecting and managing Australia’s territorial waters. Chris Smyth, Marine Policy Coordinator at the Australian Conservation Foundation, spoke with Tristan Burt about the numerous threats currently facing Australia’s marine environment.
