As images of the torture of Iraqi prisoners are splashed across media throughout the world, Amnesty International calls for the torture to cease and the perpetrators to be held accountable. Two Australian political parties are calling on the Federal government to meet our legal and moral obligations to ensure that prisoners of war are treated with respect and humanity. The Democrats introduced a number of motions to debate in the Senate this afternoon, while the Greens are calling for a Parliamentary Inquiry into the abuses of Iraqi prisoners by US and British troops. Ironically the Abu Graib prison was used under Saddam Hussein’s regime as a torture facility and now the Americans are doing the same. Cinnamon Nippard spoke to spokesperson for Amnesty Internatinal Australia, Suzi Clark, who explained how this facility could have been used very differently.
